Look around, the rise of AI is happening as quickly as the earth moves beneath our feet.
AI is changing every day, improving its accuracy and performance, inching closer to mass adoption. This is all driven by organizations pushing the boundaries to explore new revenue pathways.
It's a scary thought but it's also extremely exciting. Robot sci-fi movies coming to life where Will Smith fights an army of robocops. All fun and games until a million factory workers get laid off in a single afternoon.
The real question is how can we turn this doom and gloom of our dystopian AI future in our favor?
My wife is an accountant and she reminds me on a regular basis that much of her job can be automated and doesn't understand why AI can't just do it for her. I don't disagree; she could do cool stuff like hang the washing more often, or something like that.
Jokes aside, I always reply:
There is probably a model being trained as we speak to automate that exact task. It's just not ready yet. As long as there is a company that believes it will save significant costs by developing this model, they WILL get it done.
This is problematic for many non-technical personnel as they are the most susceptible to this type of industry-wide change.
Business owners need to upskill and stay informed on how AI and machine learning are going to impact their business, or worse, their customers.
Three key things you need to start doing:
- Educate yourself and get ahead of the curve. If it's too much for you, hire someone to simplify it and give you good advice.
- Don't panic, we are a few years off until total AI automation starts hitting critical mass.
- Always doubt the latest and greatest AI technologies. We are still in the early days and much of it is still hype/smoke and mirrors.
